Layer upon layer: quick guide to layering your skincare

Layer upon layer: quick guide to layering your skincare

Before we get into the guts of this story, let me say upfront that you do not need a 10-step skincare routine. If your patience, your bathroom counter or your bank account can’t deal with a multi-step routine, that is totally fine! Take what you like from this info and leave what you don’t. Whether you’re a minimalist or a skincare junkie (yes, I’m looking at me), we’ve got you covered 😊

While I don’t believe in hard and fast “skincare rules”, there are some general principles related to category or step, product texture and sometimes product function (see more below under Step 3).

Step 1: Cleanse 🧼

I think this is probably the most under-rated step, a non-negotiable in my book, and cleansers don’t get the airtime they deserve. Think of it as the foundation of your skincare routine. A good cleanser will wash away all the dirt, makeup, and impurities, leaving you with a fresh canvas. Remember, you don't want to apply anything on a dirty face – that's a recipe for disaster! Check out our previous story on cleansing to learn more.

Step 2: Tone 🌸

I love this step of my routine. Toners have come a long way from the stinky (would literally make your eyes water!), drying formulas of the past. Today's toners are all about hydration, brightening, and soothing. Whether you choose a toner, essence, or essence toner (yes, that's a thing!), this step preps your skin to absorb all the goodness from the next steps.

Step 3: Treat 💧

This is a huge category and is where the magic happens! Serums are your best friends here. This is also where the order can get tricky and where the texture and function of a serum comes into play. The general rule of thumb is to apply from thinnest to thickest. This ensures that the lighter serums penetrate deeply and work their wonders.

So what if 2 serums have similar textures?? That’s when the ingredients of the product may impact your choice. If I have a fancy vitamin C serum and a more run-of-the-mill hydrating serum, I’m probably going to apply the vitamin C serum first, so it has maximum contact with my skin and no potential interference from another product. Just remember, if your skin is sensitive, you might want to flip the order to buffer those potent actives.

Step 4: Moisturise 🧴

Lock in all that hydration with a good moisturiser. This step is crucial for keeping your skin barrier happy and healthy. Whether you prefer a lightweight gel or a rich cream, make sure to choose one that suits your skin type. Moisturisers help seal in all the previous layers and keep your skin plump and hydrated

Step 5: SPF (Morning Only) ☀️

The best anti-aging product you will ever use! SPF is a must in your morning routine. Protect your skin from harmful UV rays and prevent premature aging. There are so many lovely SPFs out there with skincare benefits, so no excuses!

Note: This isn’t about perfection. I admit, I don’t always use SPF every day in the cooler months or if I know my skin won't see much outside that day. However, making SPF part of your habitual rituals means you’re always protected. Some days you might also be able to combine steps 4 and 5 and just use an SPF as your moisturiser which can be a time and money saver!

Step 6: Lip Care 💋

Don't forget your lips! They need love too. Lip care doesn’t often make it onto these lists but I think it is so important! The skin on our lips is delicate, so I make a point to always hydrate and protect my lips, morning and night. Because the skin on the lips can be sensitive, be sure to keep any harsh actives in your treatment products away from your lips!

Bonus Tips 🌟

  • Exfoliate: Use a gentle exfoliant 1-2 times a week to slough off dead skin cells and reveal a brighter complexion.
  • Masks: Treat yourself to a mask session once a week. Whether it's a hydrating sheet mask or a detoxifying clay mask, your skin will thank you. Plus it’s a good excuse for some me-time.
  • Eye Cream: If you're dealing with dark circles or puffiness, an eye cream can be a game-changer. Apply it between steps 3 and 4 (i.e. before moisturiser).

And there you have it. Your foolproof guide to layering skincare products. Remember, skincare is personal so you might want the whole shebang every day, or you might be happy with the essentials (steps 1, 4, 5). Now glow get ‘em!
