Who is Cygnet Skin?
About
Hi and welcome to Cygnet Skin! I'm Tiffany, the founder of Cygnet Skin and I want to share a little bit of background to the brand. I am a science nerd (I have a PhD in cell biology), a beauty lover and have a beautiful daughter who got the idea to start making lip gloss during the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2021 – this is when the Cygnet Skin seed was planted.
While my daughter’s enthusiasm to make and sell lip gloss came and went pretty quickly, it stayed with me….and I decided to take it to a whole other level! Like many people during the lockdowns, I was looking at myself on a screen a lot, was missing the opportunity to use makeup and get glammed up, and had more free time on my hands. The combination of these things (and turning 40!) got me reading a lot about how to better care for my skin, the science of skincare, ingredients, and formulations – I became completely obsessed. I read blogs and books, listened to beauty podcasts, did a course including a deep dive into skin anatomy and physiology, and of course, my Instagram algorithm is 99% beauty.
I got to test some of my new knowledge with my son entering his mid-teens, alternating between breakouts and dryness, and asking for advice on what he should do to look after his skin. I had also noticed his friends, and my daughter who was then 11, getting into skincare and buying (or asking their parents to buy) ‘trending’ products with yummy smells and cute packaging but completely inappropriate for their skin! My daughter begged me to buy her an exfoliating serum because “all” of her friends had it, and it was all over TikTok and she was distraught when I told her she could absolutely not put that on her tween skin!
Another passion of mine is sunscreen! I'm so serious when it comes to sunscreen use and especially encouraging young people to make sunscreen a non-negotiable part of their day. In 2022 I had a Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) removed from my forehead and it was a huge wake-up call for me because I think I can almost pinpoint the time in my life when that damage was done - when I was in my late teens/early 20's and didnt have my mum telling me to cover up or 'slip, slop, slap'!
So here we are. I see more and more the need for young consumers to have products that are for them – not boring and babyish but not full of actives and targeted to more mature skin. Fun products that young people want to use every day (especially SPF!), that are accessible and ideally can be purchased in-store because let's face it, the experience of shopping with your friends/your mum/dad/aunty/cousin is so much fun (I know my daughter and I aren't the only ones who spend hours in Sephora and Mecca)!
While I have much less spare time on my hands now, my obsession with skincare and self-care, and bringing Cygnet Skin to life keeps growing. We have launched the Cygnet Skin accessories line while I work behind the scenes to bring you science-backed, elegant formulations that are fun but also friendly to young skin. I’m so excited to build the Cygnet community and take you on the journey with me!
Why Cygnet?
A Cygnet is a baby swan. Choosing this name for the brand was inspired by the journey that we all go on to find what beauty means to us.
From a young age, we are often influenced by our parents, traditionally perhaps our mums are the ones we observe, noticing how they present themselves to the world or the things they do to feel good about themselves. Sometimes there is another role model or influential person in our lives, or that we see from afar and we try to emulate the beauty we see within them. Taking their lead, we explore what makes us feel beautiful and confident, we find our own individual beauty identity and we meet and recognise ourselves - as the beautiful swan we were born to be. As we grow and with life experience, I think we can have many of these ‘awakenings’ or realisations of what beauty means to us and what makes us feel beautiful and powerful. I think this is pretty incredible and hope that Cygnet Skin will find a place in what beauty means to you.
